shopmobility

The People's Centre has been chosen to run Shopmobility as a pilot project. The scheme gives people independence when facing limited mobility. This is achieved by providing manual and powered wheelchairs or scooters (usually referred to as "buggies"). The service is operated on a not-for-profit basis and buggies are available for periods of up to a day. At the Centre we will have 6 buggies available for use to access local shops, libraries, leisure and social facilities. People with limited mobility will be able to participate more fully in Wallsend community life. The independence these schemes bring is of great benefit not just to users but also to carers and friends. We are proud to have been chosen to pilot Shopmobility in North Tyneside. The scheme was officially launched on 13th December. If you are interested in finding out more about how the Shopmobility scheme works, phone 0191 296 1437 or contact the People's Centre on 0191 263 5029.

comments from shopmobility users

Shopmobility is my lifeline to shopping ....

.... these machines give me legs .... it is wonderful to get around so easily ....

.... it has opened up doors which I didn't know existed ....

.... not only physically, but emotionally, Shopmobility has changed my life ....

Shopmobility has given me back pleasure in shopping - I can now go into shops I haven't visited in years .... I feel independent again ....

buggy

The scheme is open from 9.00am to 4.00pm (3.30pm on Friday). We have six buggies available for people with limited mobility and volunteers are on hand to help first time users. If you are interested just contact the Centre and register for £3. Then for a charge of £2 per day (£1 for a half day) the buggy is your pathway to greater independence!
