Wallsend and North Tyneside has an ethnically diverse population. The various communities use the People's Centre - including Poles, Russians, Moldovans, Iranians and people from Zaire and Mozambique. Wallsend People's Centre supports asylum-seekers, refugees and migrant workers in a number of ways. The Farsi Speakers Group meets every Saturday at the Centre. This enables people to get together with friends and to organise cultural events and activities around festivals such as Nowrooz and Yalda. English language classes take place on Saturday mornings and Tuesday evenings. They are open to all non English speakers. The Centre also works closely with other organisations - for example working with the Primary Care Trust and North Tyneside Council to offer joined-up services for refugees, asylum-seekers and migrant workers. |
