Stephen Byers M.P., who has longstanding links to Wallsend People's Centre, addresses the AGM

The Centre celebrated twenty years of delivering services to local people at our AGM on 7th December 2007. Over 50 people attended the AGM and heard guest speaker Stephen Byers M.P. talk about the early days of the Centre and how it had developed from modest beginnings into a thriving and successful community resource.

The Centre had been established as part of a network of local Centres in order to encourage and stimulate local community involvement. This was seen as of particular importance at a time when local communities were under a great deal of stress as a result of high unemployment levels and the decline of traditional industries.

A great deal had changed since 1987, unemployment levels were not as high and there had been a change in the employment sector away from heavy industry, mining and ship building with newer industries in the financial, IT and service sector coming to the fore.

The Centre had a lot to be proud of and was achieving excellent results, particularly in the sphere of employment related training and support for the long-term unemployed. He was impressed by the progress the Centre had made in becoming financially self sustaining, no longer relying on core funding from the local authority or other public bodies.

The other speaker at the AGM, Annette McGlade from the Learning Disabilities Federation spoke of her involvement during the early days of the Centre back in 1987. She was proud of her close association with the Centre, which continued to this day and paid tribute to the staff and volunteers who had played such an important role in the Centre’s continued success. She gave particular praise to Maureen Madden, the Centre manager and Michael Lisle a Centre worker. Both Maureen and Michael had longstanding involvement with the organisation and she believed the Centre would never have survived had it not been for their commitment, enthusiasm and hard work. As a gesture of appreciation she awarded each of them an “Oscar” and this light hearted gesture was applauded by those present.

On the conclusion of formal business the Chair of the Centre, Peter Latham, thanked everyone present and expressed confidence that the Centre would build on its success during the years to come.
